Useful, but not essential

Some sections were excellent and others felt like filler.

I came to this book already familiar with the basics, and it still had plenty to offer. I particularly liked the way the author builds up from simple cases before introducing the harder material. A few of the examples could be more realistic, but the underlying points come across clearly. The index and cross-references are surprisingly good, which matters for a book I will come back to. Three stars feels about right. It will stay on my shelf, but it will not be the first one I reach for.

Clear, thorough, and genuinely useful

Worth every page. I have already recommended it to two colleagues.

I bought this on a whim after seeing it mentioned in a forum thread, and I am glad I did. I found myself making notes in the margins, which is always a good sign. A couple of chapters felt like they could have been merged, but that is a minor complaint. The author is unusually honest about where the simplifications break down, which I appreciated. This is the book I wish had existed when I started working with windows desktop.

Good value, minor gaps

Solid and well-organised. A couple of chapters dragged a little.

I was looking for something that would bridge the gap between tutorials and proper reference material, and this does that well. The chapters on windows desktop are the strongest — the examples are stripped down but complete, and I could follow along without constant guessing. The balance between theory and practice is well judged; neither side dominates. Four stars, and I suspect a second edition could easily push it to five.
